What is Baku Summer Energy School?

BAKU SUMMER ENERGY SCHOOL (BSES) is an annual certificate program of the Caspian Center for Energy and Environment (CCEE) of ADA University held in July in partnership with the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and BP in Azerbaijan. It brings together world-renowned scholars, academicians and policy makers to examine and gain a better understanding of global energy and environment issues and their practical application.

Due to COVID19, the Baku Summer Energy School (BSES) will be implemented this year as a five-day ONLINE program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

BAKU SUMMER ENERGY SCHOOL (BSES) is an annual certificate program of the Caspian Center for Energy and Environment (CCEE) of ADA University held in July in partnership with the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and BP in Azerbaijan. It brings together world-renowned scholars, academicians and policy makers to examine and gain a better understanding of global energy and environment issues and their practical application.

A special focus of the program is on the Caspian Basin.  Upon completion of the program, participants are issued a certificate signed by the Rector of ADA University and the President of State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic.

The program provides a balanced approach in studying energy and the environment. BSES instructors and speakers are the leading national and international experts from academia, public and private sectors:

  • World-renowned scholars in the field of energy and the environment from the leading academic institutions, including the University of Oxford, John Hopkins University, Georgetown University, ADA University, etc.
  • Ministers and heads of governmental agencies, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Energy, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Head of the State Oil Fund (SOFAZ)
  • Representatives of international organizations, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), International Energy Charter, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), etc.
  • Executives of (oil) companies and consortiums, including SOCAR, BP, ExxonMobil, TANAP, TAP, etc.

WHO CAN APPLY?

BSES is organized for both national and international specialists dealing with energy and environment related issues:

  • Mid-career professionals from energy companies;
  • Policy-makers and civil servants from governmental institutions, embassies and international organizations;
  • Scholars/journalists/graduate students focusing their research on energy and environmental issue.

HOW TO APPLY?

For the application to Baku Summer Energy School, all applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • COPY OF ID (OF FOREIGN PASSPORT FOR FOREIGNERS; OF ID FOR LOCALS)
  • PASSPORT SIZED PHOTO (3×4)
  • SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION LETTER (OPTIONAL)

Basic information about applicant, education, employment history, relevant publications, and English language knowledge. The program requires advanced language skills. Applicants with a background in energy and/or environmental areas may add additional relevant information.

In no less than 250 and no more than 400 words, please describe your motivation for applying to this program. Tell us your future goals and career aspirations, and how the BSES program fits in with that vision.

CCEE offers a limited number of partial and full scholarships to outstanding participants on the basis of the financial need and merit. Please state the reasons for being considered for CCEE Financial Aid in the Scholarship Application Letter. Please note that this section cannot exceed 400 words (minimum 200 words) and is required only for the applicants seeking financial support.

For the applicants who have already submitted their applications: Please be informed that the submitted application forms are all well received and will be reviewed after the new submission deadline. If you would like to improve and/or make changes, you can resubmit your application as the last application received is the one that will be considered.

Incomplete applications, as well as applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

PROGRAM EXPENSES

Tuition fee for the 2020 Baku Summer Energy School is 1250 EURO. The fee includes teaching materials. CCEE grants a limited number of partial and full tuition scholarships to outstanding participants on the basis of the financial need and merit.

SELECTION PROCESS

All applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the Selection Committee of the CCEE. Competition is very tough, as class is limited to 40 participants only, while the number of applicants is much higher. Admission decisions will be based on a combination of proven interest, academic merit and professional experience in the energy and environment related fields. A limited number of partial tuition scholarships will be provided to outstanding participants on the basis of the financial need and merit. Preference will be given to self-funded applicants.
